Rampage Hit Hard With A...Decision?

By Tim Ngo, of 5thRound.com:

Unanimous decisions are supposed to be clear cut right? Then how come people started raising their eyebrows after Forrest Griffin was announced as the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion by Bruce Buffer? Rampage was gracious in defeat after, in the Octagon as he had nothing bad to say about Griffin, but in his locker room after he said, "I can't believe they gave him [Forrest Griffin] that decision. I know I won the first, but I know I lost the second round because my leg was hurtin' real bad and I was just keeping him from damaging me a lot."

Two judges gave Griffin a 48-47 decision, while one judge was watching God knows what and gave Griffin a 49-46 decision (a virtual shutout). When you look over the fight in its entirety, maybe Jackson didn't do as much as you would've liked him to but he's the champion and as Jackson put it, "I feel like if you're the champ you know what I'm saying, you gotta beat the champ but it was unanimous. I'm not a judge."

If you look over the 5thRound.com scoring during our Play-by-Play of UFC 86, we had Jackson taking the 1st Round 10-9 after dropping Griffin badly with an uppercut.

The 2nd Round was pure domination by Griffin after he injured Jackson's leg, but Griffin didn't do any damage on the mat so nobody can score that a 10-8 so we gave Griffin 10-9.

The 3rd Round was the closest round in our opinion but in the exchanges that took place during the round, Jackson clearly got the better of them with his harder strikes. We narrowly gave Jackson the 3rd 10-9.

In the 4th Round, Jackson scored an early takedown and was able to cut Griffin over his right eye. Griffin did nearly catch Rampage in a triangle choke but Jackson was easily able to escape with a mini-powerbomb. When they got back on their feet towards the end of the round, Griffin was more active but he had spent too much time on his back after getting taken down. Jackson took the 4th Round 10-9.

The 5th and deciding round felt more like the 1st with both fighters trying to feel each other out with strikes. Not much to note in the round other than Griffin being more active and landing more strikes. Griffin took the 5th Round 10-9.

In our scoring, Jackson should've won the fight 48-47 but like they always say, you can't leave it in the judge's hands. Don't forget though, you have to actually take the title from the champ as well. So is the champ REALLY here?

First of all, WRONG. Two judges gave Griffin a 48-46 decision. The other was a 49-46.

And as far as the 2nd goes, arguably the most damage done to either man the entire fight was Griffin jackin up Rampages knee in the second. While on the ground, he didn't do much damage, but he maintained a dominant position, and Rampage did 0 damage the entire round. How is that not a 10-8 round?

Too many people think striking and take downs are the only thing that score you points.

Unified Roles For Mixed Martial Arts

13:46-24A.13 Judging

(a) All bouts will be evaluated and scored by three judges.

(b) The 10-Point Must System will be the standard system of scoring a bout. Under the 10-Point Must Scoring System, 10 points must be awarded to the winner of the round and nine points or less must be awarded to the loser, except for a rare even round, which is scored (10-10).

(c) Judges shall evaluate mixed martial arts techniques, such as effective striking, effective grappling, control of the fighting area, effective aggressiveness and defense.

As far as those areas go, which is what judges score the rounds on, I thought Griffin led in each of those categories. I thought Rampage won the 1st via uppercut, and the 4th. In all other rounds, Forrest was the aggressor and he controlled the octagon, while the striking itself was fairly even through most of the fight.

Thank you. Someone else saw the same fight I did. I thought I might have watched the wrong PPV for a second. When Jackson was on top, he didn't do anything. As a matter of fact, Griffin was active and he stood back up. Even Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg said they thought Griffin was winning the fight. Again, I say this. Just cause your the champ, doesn't mean you don't have to fight your hardest in a match and still keep your belt. He was outworked and out fought in this fight. Rampages corner man told him he won the fight. Of course he did. i'd fire him if my corner man didn't believe in me. All this crying over the decision is rediculous. The reality is that IF Rampage didn't want to lose the belt, he should have fought like HE was the challenger rather than rely on a point system to retain the belt. I like Rampage, but all this talk about how he shouldn't have lost cause you have to "beat" the champ is proposturous. Griffin won this fight. Plain and simple.

I am a huge Rampage fan, but he didn't win that fight? I hate to say it but you had a better argument for Hendo when he fought Rampage than you do for this fight. Our boy will be back tho.

Enl, don't know if you'll see this, but, I am in the Marine Corps, and with our Martial arts program, we do the arm triangle. One of my Marines took a photo of me getting choked out.
